Impact of automation on long haul trucking operator-hours in the United States

Abstract Automated long haul trucking is being developed for commercial deployment in the United States. One possible mode of this technology a “transfer-hub” model where operationally less complex highway driving automated, while human drivers drive more urban segment route. We study net impacts on tractor-trailer operator-hours from deployment. Using data 2017 Commodity Flow Survey, we gather information shipments and required to fulfill those shipments. find that up 94% may be impacted as improves operate all weather conditions. If however restricted southern states majority companies are currently testing automated trucking, only 10% impacted. conduct interviews with industry stakeholders including operators feasibility such system an increase short operation unlikely compensate loss operator-hours, despite public claims effect by developers technology.
